Gur-Who?

Dave Hall is President of "Uncommon Cents, LLC", a consulting firm specializing in the disparate disciplines of asset/liability management for insurers, web site development, and fantasy sports strategy. Previously, he was employed for 21 years by The Hartford Life Insurance Companies, where he served in various actuarial and investment capacities, most recently as Senior Vice President and Director of Portfolio Management. The "Guru" moniker was graciously bestowed on him by his co-workers at The Hartford. He is a 1976 summa cum laude graduate with a B.S. in Mathematics from Westminster College (Pa.), and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, an avid amateur musician (cello and trumpet, with some occasional writing and/or arranging), and a fanatical fantasy sports enthusiast (obviously).

Dave was mentioned (and pictured) in a New York Times article on March 26, 1998. The following week, he was interviewed on Atlanta radio station WCNN. In June, 1998, he was the subject of a feature article entitled "A new life in a field of dreams" which he authored for The Actuary, the Society of Actuaries newsletter.

Dave resides in West Hartford, CT, with his wife (Gail) and three children, Jason, Kevin, and Melody.

Qualifications?

It's sometimes said that those who can, do. But those who can't, teach.

A sampling of the Guru's personal "on field" performances should be ample evidence that he "can":

  • 1st place worldwide, Small World Hoops, 1997-98 season.
  • 1st place worldwide, Major League Market baseball, 1998.
  • 5th place worldwide, Central Plaza's Hit & Run baseball, 1998.
  • 4th place worldwide, CNN/SI Hoops General Manager, 1999 (Small World Hoops clone).
  • 7th place worldwide, Small World Hoops, 1999.
  • 7th place worldwide, Small World Baseball, 2000
  • 3rd place worldwide, Midseason TSN Baseball, 2001
  • 1st place worldwide, Progressive Sports Challenge free baseball, 2001
  • 1st place worldwide, TSN Ultimate Hoops, 2002-03
