11/30 - Frank Gore lived up to his name last night, exiting the game (and the season) with a broken hip.

Congrats to Holy Rollers, with the top Football Pickoff score of 569, (14 correct picks). Almost 63% of all active pickoff slates posted a positive score this week. The Random Dart was not one of them, posting the worst result of the weekend with only 3 correct picks for a score of -463.

All three of the Miami Heat’s big 3 posted good numbers last night, which hasn’t happened often. They were only playing Washington, so I guess it’s a little early for Heat fans to celebrate.

I thought about picking a more sports-related quote from Leslie Nielsen for today’s featured quote, but instead opted for the most famous one. Here was the runner-up: "It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girl dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day." Feel free to post your favorites in the blurb comment thread.

11/29 - San Diego still seems to have Indy’s number, winning five of their last six meetings. In recent years, the Colts have generally coasted into the playoffs. But after back-to-back losses to the Patriots and Chargers, they sport only a 6-5 record, with a key game against Jacksonville looming in week #15. In fact, every team in that division is either 6-5 or 5-6, so it could be a wild month.

The top defense of the weekend (so far) has been San Diego, boosted by two interceptions returned for TDs (and two more that weren’t). When was the last time that the top defense was the one facing Peyton Manning? I suppose it could have been three years ago, when the Chargers picked off Manning six times – although I don’t have the team defense rankings from that week.

In the NBA, we had a triple double yesterday from Josh Smith. It was one of those “just enough” Kidd-like TD lines: 12 pts, 10 ast, 13 rebs. But still a triple double, nonetheless. And much better than the way he started the week, when he had 2 pts, 0 ast, 3 rebs against the Celtics.

11/24 - The best stat line in the NBA last night was 24 points, 18 rebounds, 4 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 assists – by JaVale McGee. McGee also has the distinction of being just one of two active NBA players to have four capital letters in his two names (click to reveal the other=> DeMar DeRozan). How’s that for in-depth research that you are unlikely to find at any other fantasy sports site?

As usual, there are three NFL games on Thanksgiving Thursday. For Football Pickoff, you need to make your selections for all three games prior to the kickoff time of the first game, which is 12:30pm EST. Of course, you might be better off skipping these picks. Two of the games are currently very lopsided, which makes them problematic in Pickoff.

I’ll be with family for the next two days, so the next blurb won’t be until next Monday. Enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday!

11/23 - It’s not looking like the Heat will be winning 70 games this year, as some had predicted. Currently 8-6 after a home beatdown by Indiana, they aren’t even on pace to win 50. I wonder if LeBron would like a do-over? The Cavs have only lost one more than Miami so far.

After a typical slow start (2-5), the Chargers look like they’re back on track. Now 5-5, they have a tough game next week at Indy, after which Kansas City is the only team remaining on their schedule with a winning record. At this point, it looks like the two AFC wild card teams will come from the East (Patriots or Jets) and the North (Balt or Pitt), so S.D. will probably need to beat the Chiefs in that Dec. 12 matchup to control their way into the playoffs.

In the NFC, if the playoffs were seeded today, the Giants would be outside looking in. Atlanta has the top record at 8-2, followed by five teams with only three losses. The Giants have four. And, of course, in the “NFC Worst” division, Seattle has a one game lead with a record of 5-5 and a relatively tough schedule to go, facing three of those teams with three losses or less. Their final game vs. St. Louis could actually be for the division title.

11/22 - Mark Sanchez pulled off a stunning Peyton Manning imitation in the final minute against Houston, taking the Jets 72 yards to a winning score – after apparently blowing the game with an interception just a little more than a minute earlier.

Peyton Manning pulled off a stunning Mark Sanchez imitation in the final 2-minute drive against New England, taking the Colts deep into FG territory (down 3) and then throwing an interception - after apparently on track toward a miracle comeback with two TDs drives earlier in the 4th quarter.

Go figure.

In the NBA, perhaps the most surprising stat line for the weekend was 23 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, 6 blocks, and 2 steals – but Darko Milicic - against the Lakers. That works out to 71 RSCP. He had 47.5 RSCP 2 games prior to that. Could he finally be reaching his potential? Or are these merely anomalies? In previous seasons, he would (very) occasionally pop off a 40+ TSNP game. But nothing approaching a 71 point result.

11/19 - I don’t know what was worse – watching the Fins and Bears combine for only 16 points (and only about 450 yards combined), or listening to Joe Theisman pontificate. Suffice it so say that my remote control clicker was getting some heavy back-and-forth action last night.

I heard Ron Jaworski make a comment on PTI yesterday that stunned me. “The Broncos are dead last running the football.” It used to be that they were a perennial RB factory, as Denver could seemingly mint 100-yard running backs out of thin air. But apparently, thin air by itself is not enough.

Eleven NBA games are on tap tonight, including the Lakers at Minnesota. At the start of the season, this would have been penciled in as a likely ho-hummer. But with the recent solid play of Beasley and Love, and the memory that Minnesota played the Lakers tough in L.A. just 10 days ago, this may be an interesting one after all.

11/18 - The Portland Trail Blazers announced that Greg Oden will undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee Friday and will miss the entire 2010-11 season. For his first four years in the NBA, he will have played a total of 82 games, the equivalent of one full season. Will he ever have an NBA career? He makes Yao Ming look like an iron man.

After a lackluster first couple of weeks in Minnesota, Michael Beasley has suddenly morphed into Michael Beastly, averaging 42.7 RSCP/G over his last five games. The TWolves even won three of those, although they were against weak teams. Maybe more impressive are the close road losses at Atlanta and Charlotte. Could the tandem of Beasley and Love actually lead the team to relevance?

The NFL offers a Thursday night game tonight, Chicago at Miami. Don’t forget to check your fantasy lineups, and get your Football Pickoff selection for this game logged in before the 8:20pm kickoff.

11/17 - Last night’s top guard? Raymond Felton. Top center? Drew Gooden. We all saw that coming, right?

We’re now about 10 games into the NBA season, and the player rankings are now trending toward what you’d expect. In particular, after a slow start, LeBron James now ranks 4th in average RSCP/game, and is on the rise. Perhaps the most notably missing name near the top is Kevin Durant. who ranks only 20th, three spots ahead of Dwyane Wade. They still may get back in the top 10 – we still have almost 90% of the season to be played.

I was having trouble finding anything else worth commenting on, so I embarked on some random surfing, just to see if I could discover anything unusual or surprising. And I found something – golfer John Daly has dropped 100 pounds (that’s weight, not British currency), and now weighs only 195. That’s less than I weigh! Yikes!

11/16 - Michael Vick. Wow!

Congrats to erb136, with the top Football Pickoff score of +442, in spite of missing the last two night games. Once again, this was a week when negative scores outnumbered positive scores by about 8:5, no doubt thanks to the Dallas win.

John Wall has already been declared out for tonight’s Wizards game. Gilbert Arenas, consider this your audition for a trade.

11/15 - If the “Hail Mary” pass hadn’t worked, the game would have gone into overtime – so Jacksonville might have won anyway. But as Maurice Jones-Drew commented, “I'm assuming we're all going to the ESPYs this summer, play of the year.” He could be right.

There’s nothing quite like falling behind 35-0 to give your fantasy QB the green light. Just ask Matt Cassell owners. Fortunately, the Chiefs left Cassell in to do the chucking. It could’ve been time to get Brodie Croyle some game action.

Hopefully, your fantasy football team wasn’t matched up against Rob Gronkowski last night. He’s now got six TD catches in his first nine games. Three were last night.

How ‘bout them Cowboys? Go figure.

Thanks to Gurupie RecycledSpinalFluid for suggesting today’s quote.

11/12 - Although the number of games on tap last night was limited, the action was intense and compelling – so it appears. I missed the NFL and NBA games, as I was at the UConn/Pitt football game – which also turned out to be a barnburner, so I’m not complaining.

In the NFL game, after three quarters of defensive play, the offenses broke out in the 4th quarter, with more points scored in the final 12 minutes than had been scored in the entire game to that point. Tough break if you sat or dropped Roddy White, who was supposed to be at less-then-full strength, but put up one of his most productive games of the season.

In the NBA, Boston showed they are still the team to beat in the East. After the game, LeBron talked about the early season search for the right “chemistry.” Perhaps the alchemy will soon add more Heat to transmute the chemical element “Spoelstram” into the element “Rilium”, attempting to take advantage of latter’s superior magnetism and bonding properties.

Meanwhile, the Lakers lost in Denver. As I recall, they had their difficulties with the Nuggets last year as well – in the regular season. When the playoffs arrived, that didn’t matter, as the Jazz dispatched with Denver in the first round.

11/11 - Shout out to all veterans! Thanks for all you do and have done for all of us! Hug a vet today.

Lightning struck twice in Florida. One night after a big come-from-behind win in Miami, the Jazz turned the trick again in Orlando, this time overcoming an 18-point deficit with 1:17 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Paul Millsap failed to launch a 3-pointer this time, however. Didn’t need to.

The big stat line of the night was by rookie John Wall, with a 19p-13a-10r triple-double, even more impressive because he only had one turnover, shot 50% from the field, and led the team to a win over Houston.

If you are playing the RotoHog Salary Cap game, you’ve no doubt noticed that there are way too many attractive guards right now, and Chris Paul’s schedule starts to heat up in the next week. What’s a mother to do?

         Comment on this blurb

11/10 - LeBron got his first triple-double of the year, and although the game went into overtime, he had the TD in regulation. But that was not really the story of the game. Utah trailed (on the road) by 22 points in the second quarter, and still came back to win in overtime. Paul Millsap scored a career high 46 points – and that included three treys (3-3). All three were dictated by the game situation, taken in the final 30 seconds of regulation when Utah stormed back from an 8-point deficit. So 3-3 may end up being his season totals in 3-point shooting. Or, maybe he’ll now feel empowered. His prior career totals from beyond the arc were 2-20 over four seasons, however.

When the Timberwolves go to play the Lakers in L.A., you assume the fourth quarter will be contested between scrubs. Not so last night. Minnesota led after the 1st quarter, and although the Lakers came back in the second quarter, they were never able to gain enough margin to go on cruise control. Kevin Love had a monster effort in his return to his college town, with 23 points and 24 boards.

Indiana shot 20-20 from the field against Denver in the 3rd quarter last night before Josh McRoberts clanged a 3-point attempt in the final two seconds. (I didn’t see it, so I’m guessing he clanged it – but maybe it was a whiff.) The Pacers scored 54 in that frame, “paced” by 24 from Mike Dunleavy. The team scored “only” 59 in the first half, so they were already at 113 when the 4th quarter began. That was Denver’s total for the entire game.

11/9 - When Terrell Owens signed with Cincinnati, it was unclear whether he or Chad Ochocinco would have the upper hand this season. So far, it’s not all that close, with Owens ahead by 15 receptions, 300 yards, and 5 TDs. Actually, that may be a bit misleading, as Owens racked up about half of that full-season advantage last night, with a comparative excess of 9 catches for 126 yards and 2 TDs. But if you drafted T.O. this season, you’re probably quite happy with the results. If you took Ochocinco, not so much.

By the way, why does Jon Gruden refuse to use the name “Ochocinco”? He consistently referred to him as “Chad Johnson” last night, while Ron Jaworski was using the newer name. The disparity seemed a bit strange at times. For example, at one time late in the game (if I recall correctly), Gruden said something like “Johnson is split wide to the right”, after which Jaws interjected (in the next moment – as though we might not know who “Johnson” was), “That’s Ochocinco at the top of your screen.”

In Football Pickoff, 60% of all active slates posted positive scores. Kudos to craftygirl with the top score of 652, missing only last night’s game. At the other extreme, the Random Dart got its comeuppance this week with the worst score of -441, getting only one correct pick - the Jets over Detroit. After running out to a very strong start through the first five weeks, the dart has now taken four lumps in a row.

By the way, the midseason competition has now started in Football Pickoff. This contest simply discards the results for the first eight weeks. If you got off to a bad start, here is a chance to reclaim some dignity.

11/8 - Enough of the talk about how much “individual talent” the Cowboys have. The facts show that the team is awful. Remember when there was speculation that Dallas could have a home game in the Super Bowl? How laughable is that now?

You’ve got to feel for Detroit. Kicker Jason Hanson leaves the game with a knee injury, leaving DT Ndamukong Suh to attempt an extra point in the 3rd quarter – which hit the right upright. That missed point allowed the Jets to be able to tie the game at the end of regulation with a 36-yard FG. And the Jets then won the toss and then the game after just 2 minutes of OT.

Michael Vick picked up right where he left off several weeks ago. He threw for a TD (17/29, 218 passing yds), he ran for a TD (74 yds on 10 carries), and he led the Eagles to a 2-point win over Indy.

In the NBA, Pao Gasol managed a triple-double last night (20p-10a-14r), and he did it in only 33 minutes, since the game was a blowout win over Portland. You could make a case that he’s off to the best start of any NBA player so far this season, leading in total RSCP with an average of 51/game. The ESPN player rater (8-cat roto scoring) says that the best player so far is Rudy Gay, whose advantage over Gasol is due to his superior treys and steals. Rajon Rondo could be in the conversation if he could only make free throws. In fantasy point scoring, that doesn’t hurt him so much, but in roto leagues, it’s quite an anchor.

I guess the NBA has decided to butt heads with Monday Night Football this fall, with six games scheduled tonight. My recollection was that Mondays tended to be light for the NBA until MNF was done, but that doesn’t appear to be the case this season. Maybe I’m just “misremembering.”

11/5 - Kevin Durant owners, take heart. It took an overtime period, but Durant finally topped the 40 RSCP mark. He’s generally been scoring enough points this year, with at least 28 points scored in 4 of his 5 games. But his FG% of 37% is hurting his value, and his other stats have not been making up the difference – at least, not for a consensus #1 fantasy draft pick. Last night, he shot 46% from the field, with 11 rebounds & 3 blocks. Still not the overall stat line for the #1 player. But trending in the right direction.

One guy who hasn’t been disappointing his owners so far is Durant’s teammate Russell Westbrook. Westbrook only has one game below 40 TSNP, averaging 44 RSCP in just 36 minutes per game. His average stat line has been 22 pts, 6.6 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and shooting percentages of 42%/94%. The FG% may be his weakest stat, but it’s that same percentage that he shot all of last year, so it probably “is what it is.” That average stat line makes him worthy of a late first round fantasy draft pick, about a round earlier than he was actually drafted in the RIHC leagues.

Of course, the Oklahoma City season is only 5 games old. A month from now, the world could once again be in normal alignment. We’ll see.

11/4 - Kobe Bryant had a 30-12-10 triple-double last night. While there is no question that he’s one of the all-time NBA greats, he’s not one who you expect a triple-double from. In his 15th NBA season, this is just his 17th TD. That ranks him #4 (tied with Garnett) among active players (behind Kidd[105], LeBron[34], and Grant Hill[29]).

You didn’t need to have Kobe to have a good night in fantasy hoops. Ten players topped the 50 RSCP threshold, including four with 60 or better. One of those was Rajon Rondo, whose 15 assists almost seem like an off-night this year – yet he was only 2 rebounds short of his own triple-double (17-15-8).

         Comment on this blurb

11/3 - You don’t usually have an NBA game postponed. Occasionally, a blizzard will wipe out a game. But last night’s game in Madison Square Garden wasn’t about the weather. It was about whether asbestos was released during recent renovations. Apparently it was not. No make-up date has been announced, but when it is, I’ll update the NBA schedules on this site.

Rajon Rondo continued to dish ‘em out, with another 17 assists last night. Through four games, he’s averaging 17 assists per game. Last year, he averaged about 10 assists/game – but I do note that he also started strong, averaging 12.3 in his first three games. Nonetheless, he only had at least 17 assists in two games last year – exactly 17 vs. the Nets on Feb 27, and 18 vs. Sacramento on March 18. So the fact that he already has reached or exceeded that number three times in his first four games this year is certainly notable.

Rondo wasn’t even the top point guard last night, though, as he scored only 9 points while getting 4 steals. Compare that to John Wall, who scored 29 points with 13 assists and 9 steals. Wall did turn the ball over 8 times, but his fantasy point total was still way above anyone else for the night. In the RIHC leagues, Wall was drafted #42 on average. That may turn out to be one of the better bargains. Then again, it’s early in the season, and he may still hit the proverbial “rookie Wall.”

11/2 - The oft quoted cliché “Good pitching stops good hitting” was certainly true in the 2010 World Series. Texas had the highest regular season team batting average in the American League. San Francisco ranked only 9th in the NL in runs scored. But the Rangers managed only 29 hits in 5 games vs. the Giants - while San Francisco scored 29 runs!

In Football Pickoff, we finally had a week with more positive scores than negatives. It’s been awhile since that happened. Kudos to Mike, with the top weekly score of 605, in spite of missing the Monday night game.

During the NFL season, the NBA tends to offer light schedules on Sunday and Monday. Tonight, we return to a fuller slate with 7 games, followed by 12 games tomorrow. It’s nice to have something current to do during the mid-week NFL lull.

11/1 - I can read what Mike Shanahan said about his benching of Donovan McNabb. But I can’t understand why he would think that Rex Grossman would be better equipped then McNabb to handle the pressure of a two-minute drill. And it didn’t help his cause when Grossman promptly fumbled on his first play to give Detroit a “that’s the game” TD. I’m not going to dwell on the issue here, because I suspect it’s going to be scrutinized ad nauseum in the mainstream sports media. But Rodney Harrison’s quote last night sheds some contrasting perspective: “I wouldn’t put Rex Grossman in a two minute offense in a high school game.”

We had the first two triple doubles in the NBA this weekend. Rajon Rondo dished out 24 assists to go with 10 points and 10 boards against the Knicks on Friday. One night later, Brandon Jennings authored a more typically configured 20-10-10 stat line vs. Charlotte.

Meanwhile, LeBron James finally had his first game with at least 40 RotoHog Salary Cap points (RSCP) – exactly 40. (For oldtimers, that is equivalent to 40 TSNP.) Last season, he only had one sub-40 TSNP game in his first 15 games. While the season is still very young, it’s looking like he may have trouble justifying first round fantasy draft credentials, let alone top-3. His RSCP average ranks 35th so far. In standard 8-category roto leagues, his averages produce a current ranking of #32 on the ESPN Player Rater (just one spot ahead of Dwyane Wade, interestingly enough.)
