Daily blurbs from the Guru If this is your first visit to this site, you should first stop by my home page to find out what this site is all about. And please support this site's advertisers. They make free sites like this one possible. Go forward to more recent blurbs. 8/30 - The sortable stats are now posted for all of the currently covered salary cap football games: FireLeague, FanDuel, DraftStreet, and StarStreet. Use the game menu to select your game of interest. I did my best (within reason) to be as complete as possible, although I may have missed some players for some games, due to spelling differences, or simply failure to include some late additions to the database. I’ll feel more comfortable about the completeness once we have the first weekend in the books. Meanwhile, feel free to report anything that looks off. FireLeague salary cap gamers may notice some minor discrepancies in the total points appearing in the sortable stats vs. those displayed at the Fireleague site. The points that I’m showing are the same points that I calculated and published during last year’s regular season. If there were any late statistical adjustments, they may not be reflected. In any event, the discrepancies look to be minor. The Assimilator is also up and running for both versions of Fireleague football. Opening night is less than a week away. Have at it! 8/29 - If you are searching for GuruGolf scoring this morning, you’ll have to wait a day. This weekend’s tournament is the only one of the season with a Friday start. So you can go back to bed. Or work. (Probably sleep, either way.) I will be producing all of the usual football games and tools again this year. Football Pickoff has already launched and is ready for your picking pleasure. FireLeague is once again offering the game formally known as Smallworld/TSN/RotoHog Salary Cap Football, and I’ll have the preseason sortable stats posted by the end of the weekend. And I’ll also have sortable stats for the three affiliated daily contest sites - FanDuel, DraftStreet, and StarStreet. Those stats should be up this weekend as well. I’m also thinking of expanding the list of daily contest sites with which I affiliate, so if you have a favorite other contest site, let me know. 8/28 - Some people have trouble hitting woods. But two Woods had no trouble missing bats last night, as Alex Wood and Travis Wood combined to allow only one run in 12.2 IP, fanning 13. Travis even bested Cy Young frontrunner Clayton Kershaw. In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, Yahoo released a complete revampment of its sports pages. So far, I don’t like it at all. The grey font over an uneven dark background is often hard to read, and I’ve noticed a lot of misfires over the past day, with pages coming up empty, or data (like boxscores) sometimes appearing and sometimes not. The one thing I liked about Yahoo’s presentation was that it was simple, clean, complete, and easy to read. Not so anymore. And some statistical baseball data that I used to look at is no longer available. This all created some hiccups at DailyBaseballData.com yesterday, as I had been accessing some limited data from some Yahoo pages. I was able to restore the most critical processes, but some reconstruction is going to linger, as I’ve got too much football activity on my crowded plate this week. Speaking of football, the RIFC Rationale thread is now available, updated on about a two round lag from the actual draft. When evaluating this draft, remember that the RIFC has very deep rosters, including 7 individual defensive starters, and also includes kick and punt return stats. The IDP points are also skewed vs traditional leagues in order to provide more consistent value across positions (with points included for tackles, sacks, tackle-for-loss, QB hits, & passes defensed). So while some picks may seem odd, they might make perfect sense in this format. And then again, some might just be odd. 8/26 - I’ve been away off-and-on for the past three weeks, and never got around to blurbing – as the ensuing evidence clearly indicates. But that doesn’t mean the site has been dormant. Of course, GuruGolf is steamrolling toward the finish line, with only three events remaining. Both the best and worst ball competitions have a clear frontrunner at this stage, but we’ve seen things turn around quickly in the past – although this next tournament is the last one that offers a 2nd-round cut, which makes big swings during the final two weeks more unlikely. The big shift during August, though, is the preparations for football season. I hope to have the sortable stats up and running later this week, for both the affiliated daily contest sites and for the FireLeague Salary cap game (the current incarnation of the old Smallworld/TSN format). Stay tuned. All four of the RIFC leagues are now in draft mode. You can follow all four drafts with this link. Rationales for the RIFC draft will be posted in the RotoGuru Forum as the draft proceeds. I’m working on a new method of assembling the rationale thread, and hope to have something posted later today or tomorrow (perhaps depending on whether my afternoon golf outing gets rained out or not.) 8/5 - While Tiger Woods was tearing up the field in Akron, Gary Woodland was doing similar damage in Reno, much to the delight of about 42% of all active GuruGolf teams this weekend, including the two teams that shared the top best ball score of -54. Worst ball honors were claimed by Slice of Bread (+46). Today will reportedly be “Biogenesis day” in major league baseball, as official suspension announcements are expected for some of the worst kept secrets ever. The most interesting aspect will probably be the size of the hammer that comes down on A-Rod, and whether he is given a chance to keep playing during an appeal.
